Definition Of Electric Motorcycles

Electric motorcycles are a type of electric vehicle powered by batteries driving an electric motor. The electric drive and control system consists of a drive motor, power source, and motor speed control device. Other components of electric motorcycles are largely similar to those of internal combustion engine vehicles. They are classified by maximum speed or motor power into electric mopeds and electric motorcycles. Electric bicycles feature pedal-assisted riding capability, while electric mopeds and motorcycles lack pedals. Their maximum design speeds are capped at 50 km/h and exceed 50 km/h, respectively, with the combined maximum output power of electric motors exceeding 4 kW.

The composition of electric motorcycles includes: the electric drive and control system, mechanical systems such as the drive transmission, and working devices to accomplish designated tasks. The electric drive and control system is the core of electric vehicles and the key distinction from internal combustion engine-driven vehicles. Both electric two-wheeled mopeds and electric two-wheeled standard motorcycles are classified as motor vehicles. To operate them on public roads, one must obtain a Class D, E, or F driver's license, register the motorcycle with a license plate, and purchase compulsory traffic insurance. [15-16] In 2024, China's electric motorcycle and bicycle export value surpassed 40 billion yuan for the first time. From January to June 2025, Chongqing's electric motorcycle production reached 1.237 million units, marking a 33% year-on-year increase. Driven by the industry's electrification and intelligent transformation, the number of electric motorcycle exhibitors at the 2025 event increased by 60% compared to the previous edition. Products featured smart interaction systems, dynamic safety monitoring, and Beidou positioning navigation capabilities.
